Text and file encryption

Encrypt or decrypt text and files locally with a password using authenticated AES-256-GCM encryption.

Local processing
Instructions and limits
  1. Choose text or file, then encrypt or decrypt. For encryption, enter and confirm a password of at least 12 characters.
  2. Copy or download the result. Decrypt this tool’s own output with the original password; clear everything when finished.

Requires HTTPS and Web Crypto. Plain text: 1 MiB UTF-8; original files: 20 MiB. AES-256-GCM with PBKDF2-SHA256 at 600,000 iterations and fresh random salt and IV. Supports this tool’s versioned format, not arbitrary AES ciphertext. Lost passwords cannot be recovered. Passwords and content are not stored or uploaded; protect copied and downloaded files.

Use cases and example

Password-protect text or a file before sharing the encrypted copy through another channel.

Choose a file and encrypt it with a long random password, then download the .doc80enc file. The recipient selects file decryption in this tool and enters the original password. Share the password through a separate channel.

Encryption does not verify the sender’s identity. Only this tool’s format is accepted. A wrong password or modified ciphertext produces no partial plaintext. Lost passwords cannot be recovered; test decryption on a copy and retain the original.
